Had a nature vs nurture debate with my girlfrens over dinner the other day...
We're staring at the star and start discussing about horoscope- its accuracy & reliability.
they claim that horoscope analysis determines one's personality while upbringing affects one's attitude which combined results in behavior. I just cannot convince myself that some magnetic forces or what so ever have an impact on who I am today. *hummmz... the only force in universe that I love and hate is gravity (period)
It's not easy having a 3-to-1 debate even though I've all the psyco research backing me up...
According to them, the horoscope description on the Today's paper is quite accurate. But to me, it's all self fulfilling prophecy. If it's true, then some 400,000 people in Singapore will share the same predictions as you- common sense tells me it's unlikely.
my idea of 'nature' is nearly always due to genetics & inheritance and never did star and planets positions occur to me as a possible cause of who I am today. So, I begin my quest on the validity of such horoscope studies~
"Astrology is concerned with the attempt to correlate scientific study of astronomical objects and phenomena with earthly affairs. Astrology is variously considered by its proponents to be a symbolic language, a form of art, science,or divination. The scientific community generally considers astrology to be a pseudoscienceor superstition as astrologers have failed empirical tests in controlled studies. Despite the lack of scientific evidence, belief in astrology is widespread."

Current research does not provide solid answers to the validity of such studies- the advocates just fall back on previous theories by scientist that is now proven invalid. And also current psychology theories that emphasize the importance of self-esteem in people's lives being extremely difficult to prove scientifically, yet we feel that the importance is obvious.
And hence, their argument is that in years to come, astrology will be given its credit too- it's valid until proven otherwise.
And interestingly, they claims that people use astrology in many different ways, from investing in the stock market, making business decisions, to analyzing political situations and social movements. - I'm amazed.

influences by taiwan variety shows vs reading too much psyco text- I'm trying to apply what I've learn and so influence my perception of the validity of whatever is not scientifically proven. Whereas my girls are drawing similarities between what they watch and read in the mass media to their individual lives- and hence, giving us different conclusion on the same issue.
